Starbucks is contending with labor issues as its꧃ new management team seeks to overhaul the coffee giant꧅.

At issue: a clash over clothing that a group organizing Starbucks baristas says is the latest sign that the company is “undermining” the union. Some 1,000 Starbucks (SBUX) workers have engaged in rolling, one-day strikes at 75 stores since Sunday, Workers Un⛄ited said Wednesday. The cafe chain said the walk-offs haven’t disrupted operations at most of the 10,000 company-operated stores in the U.S.

Employees launched the strike because Starbucks changed its dress code—and how the policy is enforced—without negotiating with Workers United, the group said. The move was the latest example of Sꩲtarbucks “undermining the Union’s representational status,” the group wrote in a complaint filed with federal regul♛ators. 

Starbucks as of this week began requiring staff to wear a solid black short or long-sleeved shirt under their green apron, as well as khaki, black, blue or denim bottoms. The company sꦍaid it would issue two branded T-shirts to each employee at no cost in  

But the shirts weren’t universally available, Workers United said, and some workers were told their footwear was no longer acceptable. Ma🌟ny baristas can’t afford new items, said Paig🐬e Summers, a shift supervisor at a Maryland Starbucks involved with a walkout. “Customers don’t care what color our clothes are when they’re waiting 30 minutes for a latte,” she said.

Starbucks said updating its dress code is part of the “normal course of business."

“Our simplified dress code is meant to deliver a more consistent coffeehouse experience to our customers, while also bringing simpler and clearer guidance to our partners, helping them to focus on what matters most, crafting great beverages and fostering connections with customers,” the company said in a statement.
